Respond & Recharge: Free Fire Extinguisher Recharges for First Responders

When first responders arrive at an emergency, having the right equipment ready can make a critical difference. Portable fire extinguishers are one of those tools that help firefighters, police officers and other emergency personnel act quickly when they encounter a fire.

An officer may use an extinguisher at the scene of a vehicle accident. A fire department may deploy one to control a small fire before it spreads. Whatever the situation, once the extinguisher has been discharged, it needs to be properly serviced before it is ready for the next call.

At Silco, protecting people and property is what we do. The Respond & Recharge Program is one more way we can support the first responders who share that mission.

Through the program, Silco will recharge standard ABC and CO₂ fire extinguishers at no cost when first responders use them in the line of duty.

How Respond & Recharge Works

If your department or agency uses an ABC or CO₂ fire extinguisher during an emergency response, Silco makes it easy to get it recharged and ready for the next call.

Choose whichever option works best for your department:

  1. Submit a form. Complete our Respond & Recharge form and tell us about the extinguisher and how you’d like to have it serviced, and a member of our team will follow up with next steps.
  2. Give us a call. Find the phone number for your nearest Silco location and let our team know the extinguisher was used by a first responder in the line of duty.
  3. Bring it to a Silco location. Find the Silco location closest to you and drop off your discharged extinguisher. Let our team know it’s part of the Respond & Recharge Program.

For qualifying extinguishers, Silco will provide the recharge at no cost and help get the unit ready to return to service.

Service may include:

  • Fire extinguisher recharge
  • Inspection of the extinguisher as part of the recharge process
  • Replacement tamper seal and service tag, as applicable

Program eligibility is limited to serviceable, rechargeable ABC and CO₂ fire extinguishers used by first responders in the line of duty.

Respond & Recharge is designed to support first responders and public safety organizations throughout the communities Silco serves. Complimentary service is available for serviceable, rechargeable ABC and CO₂ fire extinguishers used by first responders in the line of duty.

Professional Fire Systems Training at Silco’s James A. Fraser Training Center

Fire safety often begins with reducing everyday risks and arming yourself with the knowledge to respond confidently in an emergency. Silco’s state-of-the-art James A. Fraser Training Center in Columbus, Ohio, provides hands-on fire systems training designed to help teams better understand how life safety systems work, respond, and integrate in real-world environments.

Featuring two fully equipped classrooms, advanced audiovisual capabilities, a water-based suppression lab, and dedicated spaces for kitchen and gaseous suppression systems, the center is designed to support immersive, real-world learning. All equipment is fully functional and can be disassembled and reassembled for instructional purposes—ensuring participants gain practical experience with the systems they encounter in the field.

Continuing Education Credits (CEUs)

To support ongoing professional development, CEU credits are available for Ohio fire service professionals. CEU availability varies based on state laws and organizational requirements, and our team can assist with the CEU approval process if your organization requires review. Attendance certificates are available upon request.

Class Breakdown

Our training program covers a wide range of topics, including General Firefighter Awareness, Fire System Basics, and Fire Inspector Knowledge.

Firefighter’s Basic Awareness Class
Designed for fire service professionals, the firefighter’s basic awareness class includes three sessions:

1. Tour of Fire Alarm Control Panel Exhibits (90 minutes)

This session features multiple live fire alarm demonstration panels, including:

  • Addressable and conventional fire control equipment
  • Smoke, heat, and carbon monoxide detection
  • Low-frequency alert, strobe, horn, and voice evacuation devices
  • High-rise evacuation and emergency simulations
  • Elevator recall and smoke control simulation
  • Reset procedures for emergency activation, pull stations, and control panels

2. Tour of the Live Water-Based Protection Systems Exhibit (90 minutes)

Participants will explore:

  • Wet, dry, and pre-action sprinkler risers and controls
  • Foam and standpipe system examples
  • Fire department connection (FDC)
  • Water motor gongs
  • Electronic monitoring of waterflow, tamper, and low air
  • Fire pump and jockey pump examples
  • UL-listed fire air compressors
  • Riser-mounted air compressor (coming soon)

3. Tour of the Suppression Systems Lab (60 minutes)

Hands-on learning includes:

  • Kitchen suppression equipment and examples
  • Captive Aire hood demonstrations
  • Link-style, pneumatic tubing, and electronic detection
  • Mechanical and electric gas valve examples
  • Residential kitchen hood suppression
  • Operational CO₂ fire suppression system
  • Pre-action sprinkler head activation example

Silco Expands Charitable Giving with New CommUNITY Impact Program

CINCINNATI, OH — August 2025 — Silco Fire & Security, a leading Ohio-based fire protection and security company, has launched a new company-wide initiative to formalize and expand its long-standing commitment to community service. The newly established CommUNITY Impact Program supports employee volunteerism, corporate giving and company-led events across all Silco locations in Ohio and Kentucky

While Silco’s core mission is to protect people and property through innovative fire protection and security solutions, the company recognizes that its impact can extend far beyond job sites. The CommUNITY Impact Program empowers employees to make meaningful contributions in the communities where they live and work, strengthening both community connections and workplace culture. 

“Our ability to make an impact goes far beyond the work we do,” said Ashley Schmitz, VP of Human Resources at Silco. “This program is designed to unite teams across all of our branches and give back to the communities we call home.” 

Through the program, each Silco employee is eligible for up to eight paid hours of volunteer time annually. In addition, the company will match employee donations to qualified nonprofits up to $200 per year. Team members can choose causes close to their hearts or participate in company-led volunteer events throughout the year. 

One such event is the company’s annual Veterans Day Walk, which raises awareness for veteran suicide prevention. The cause is deeply personal for Silco, where nearly one-third of the workforce is made up of U.S. military veterans. 

“Whether you’re volunteering or donating, it all makes a difference,” said Dave Fraser, President of Silco. “It’s about coming together as a team, your family away from home, to serve others and build stronger communities.”

With over 450 employees across seven branches, Silco estimates the CommUNITY Impact Program could contribute more than 3,000 volunteer hours annually, creating a measurable impact through corporate social responsibility. 

Silco has long supported local nonprofits through donations, supply drives and day-of-service events. However, this is the company’s first time unifying those efforts under a formalized and branded program. Leaders hope the initiative will not only boost Silco’s community outreach but also drive employee engagement and team connection across branches.
